PlatinumB Heart is a protest album in progress, and a personal musical, poetic inquiry on identity. The project poses various questions about the numbness of heart that must occur to allow black bodies to be broken with bullets to protect the platinum of white monopoly capital; the numbness of heart brought by being landless and dispossessed in your own country, the numbness of heart that comes with living in a country with shameless corrupt leaders, and the numbness of heart while living in the rape capital of the world. Msaki and her band, The Golden Circle, create a sound that combines soulful folk, symphonic movements, and African poly-rhythms with portals of improvisation. For this performance at The Orbit she features poet, Mandi Poefficient Vundla. PlatinumB Heart was sparked by a song called Blood Guns and Revolutions, where Msaki was grappling with our broken inheritance from the older generation who grew up with 'teargas in their hearts', and mourning the loss of life of Marikana miners whose 'blood flooded the foothill onto wealthy hands'. PlatinumB Heart is also concerned with trauma and its nature to ossify, alienate and elude one into thinking one is coping. The heart merely becomes numb as we move on to the next #trending issue without a chance to mourn or the time to heal. Msaki uses personal stories to trace and validate fault lines in her own history. She shares her search to feel human, to remain supple in spirit, to be fearlessly woman, to be proudly black in the face of blatant inequality and racism.
