Salim Washington & SankofaFri 23 - Sat 24 February
The Orbit Jazz Club
Sankofa plays hard-hitting original jazz which contemplates the state of life and culture in South Africa, while supporting pan African consciousness. The repertoire centers around Salim Washington's original compositions, but also pays homage to other revolutionary composers.
Washington's compositional and playing styles are quite wide ranging and eclectic. He is profoundly influenced by the compositional complexity and political commentary of master composers Charles Mingus, Andrew Hill, and Stevie Wonder; the spiritual exploration of great tenor players such as John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Mankunku Ngozi, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and the political elan of Gil Scott Heron, Kendrick Lamar, the Last Poets, Amiri Baraka.
With Sankofa, Washington has the luxury of building a musical community and to compose with specific artists in mind. He relishes bringing out each unique voice and placing it in a setting that will bring out their best and present it to audiences in the best setting. Sankofa is a musical, compositional, political, spiritual experience.
